Welcome to Complete Foot and Ankle!
Diabetic Foot Pain
Diabetic foot issues may develop without realization. Over 30 million people in the United States are currently diagnosed with diabetes, and sometimes diabetic neuropathy. This is when you cannot feel heat, cold, or pain. Situations like these make it hard to know when something is being left untreated, which can result in severe issues such as amputation.
Tips to prevent these serious issues:
- NEVER wait until a wound gets too bad to treat. Gangrene may develop which is a severe infection that can cause diabetes to lead to sepsis or amputation.
- Foot ulcers may develop. They are sores that develop from tissue loss on the skin; they can be quite painful and require intensive treatment.
- To prevent foot ulcers, wash your feet every day (keep them dry but moisturized), change your socks frequently, trim your toenails, and have your feet evaluated at least once a year.
- Poor circulation and increased blood sugar is a recipe for bacteria, which is why visiting your doctor for annual checkups is crucial for maintaining your health, especially with diabetes.
Your “alarm” system may not be effective in calling attention to a wound which is why it is critical to observe your feet every day and reach out to the Complete Foot & Ankle podiatrists about any diabetic foot pain questions or concerns.
